Originally built as a casino in the late 1800’s on farm and dairy land at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, the Broadmoor Hotel began to take shape of what it is today when Spencer Penrose, an entrepreneur from Philadelphia, bought the property in 1916. Penrose struck it big in the Cripple Creek gold mining rush and his vast fortune helped him transform the failed casino into one of the most extravagant 5-star hotels the world has ever seen.

The majority of students who live in Southwest Colorado Springs attend Cheyenne Mountain School District 12. School District 12 has been “Accredited with Distinction” by the Colorado Department of Education. Cheyenne Mountain Elementary and Cheyenne Mountain High School have been honored as recipients of the National Blue Ribbon School Award.
