The Fountain Valley area refers to the city of Fountain and the Security-Widefield area, located just southeast of Colorado Springs and also the largest unincorporated area in Colorado. Widefield and Security are labeled like a city for the purpose of the US Census (a census-designated place or CDP) but properties in Security and Widefield will have a designated Colorado Springs mailing address and zip code.

The Fountain Valley area was inhabited by settlers as early as the 1850s who took advantage of prime farm land adjacent to Fountain Creek. Wholesome traditions continued throughout the years and today an abundance of parks and recreation opportunities are available for the residents of Fountain Valley. Widefield Community Park, Fountain Creek Nature Center, Fountain Creek Regional Park and the open space around Big Johnson Reservoir are among the favorites for locals.

Students of Security and Widefield attend Widefield School District 3. Established in 1874, Widefield School District 3 is one of the oldest school districts in El Paso County and operates similar to a governmental body. Other unique functions of the school district include developing and maintaining local parks and trails and administering the Security Public Library. The school district also owns and maintains Widefield Parks and Recreation, a local community center. Students living on Ft. Carson and in the city of Fountain attend Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8, consisting of 8 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 1 high school.
